The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is located just a 17
miles west of Las Vegas strip and encompasses 195,819 acres within the
Mojave Desert. Red Rock Canyon is an area of worldwide geologic interest
and the formations date back about 180 – 190 million years. Red Rock
features a breathtaking one-way 13-mile scenic drive, a picnic area and
visitor center offering information, a book and gift store,
interpretation about recreation activities, camping, thousands of
wildlife and plant vegetation varieties, endangered species, geology and
cultural resources, and 19 marked hiking and trails that range in
difficulty from easy to strenuous. Many amateur and experienced
geologists, locals, and tourists visit Red Rock and are amazed by the
rock formations, natural beauty, and the vivid colors.
Red Rock is supported through admission fees and a 501c3 non-profit organization. Vehicle/ pedestrian fees, and annual passes make up a portion of how this beautiful land is cared for. A portion of the proceeds from passes purchased at Red Rock Canyon National Recreation Area stay in the area and help fund the Visitor Center and our many public programs. Special discounts and passes are available called the America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass and include Annual, Senior, Access, and Military passes. The non-profit is called "Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, it was created to enhance the recreational, educational and interpretive programs of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and other governmental agencies, by providing materials and services, which promote an understanding and appreciation of the natural history, cultural history and sciences of Southern Nevada. The BLM land is protected land; BLM conserves the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations."
With so much to see and do while visiting Red Rock, there is something
for everyone and each season brings a freshness and change, from
scorching summer temperatures, to yellowing autumn leaves, snow-capped
mountains blanketed with fallen snow, or cool and clear skies in the
springtime. Pitch a tent and stay over at Red Rock Canyon Campground.
The campground is open Labor Day weekend through Memorial Day weekend.
Reservations are only accepted for group sites, individual campsites are
available on a first-come, first-served basis. Be on the lookout for
Mojave Max, an endangered desert tortoise that calls Red Rock home. Red
Rock National Conservation Area is just another reason why we think
Vegas is awesome.
